Ila Kumar Advances Community Design for Tech Youth

According to MIT News, sixth-year doctoral student Ila Kumar focuses on community-based design, a framework where impacted individuals co-create technology alongside engineers. Since entering MIT in 2021, Kumar has partnered with organizations such as Stepping Forward LA to create a visual collage app for emotional expression, and the Justice Resource Institute to build a treatment-planning app. Additionally, she co-facilitated a technology leadership circle with Foster America, led AI literacy workshops for caregivers, and established a biweekly community of practice across MIT and Harvard University.

Digital platforms often fail vulnerable populations when built in isolation. By integrating social service providers, clinicians, and foster youth directly into development, Kumar's approach ensures software accounts for real-world barriers and cultural contexts. Her work demonstrates how artificial intelligence and mobile applications can safely assist trauma-impacted youth in decision-making and therapeutic goals when grounded in authentic human relationships.
