Amazon Texas Data Center Could Be Top U.S. Polluter

According to reports originally detailed by The New York Times and covered by TechCrunch, Amazon’s planned Texas facility includes dedicated on-site power generation. Permitting documents allow the fossil-fuel plant to release 33 million tons of carbon dioxide each year, an output higher than any operating power plant in the United States. This expansion occurs alongside rising energy demands required to support energy-intensive artificial intelligence infrastructure across the tech sector.

The project highlights a growing conflict between corporate sustainability goals and AI infrastructure demands. Amazon previously co-founded a climate pledge aiming to eliminate its carbon emissions completely by 2040. However, the company reported a 16% increase in carbon emissions last year. Building massive natural gas facilities risks further driving up corporate emissions while escalating political opposition regarding regional electricity demands.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the project's dedicated generation, stating it "won’t raise electricity costs for Texas families." The spokesperson added, "The world looks different now than when we co-founded the climate pledge," while maintaining that "our commitment hasn’t changed."
